Opportunity Assessment: Turning Scientific Research into Biotech Innovation
Evaluating the potential of scientific discoveries
As part of the VISION project, an interactive workshop on Opportunity Assessment explored how scientific ideas can be evaluated and developed into impactful innovations in the biotechnology sector.
The session was led by Wafa B’chir, CEO and co-founder of Connect’Innov, and focused on helping participants understand how to assess the potential of research-based innovations, analyse market dynamics, and identify opportunities for translating scientific discoveries into real-world applications.
From research potential to market opportunities
Transforming a scientific discovery into a viable innovation requires more than scientific excellence. It also involves understanding the needs that an innovation could address, evaluating its potential market, and identifying the resources and partnerships needed to support its development.
Throughout the workshop, participants explored approaches to assessing biotechnology opportunities and examining the factors that influence their potential for development and commercialisation.
Opportunity assessment is an important step in bridging the gap between academic research and entrepreneurship. It helps researchers and innovators evaluate the relevance of their ideas, anticipate challenges, and make informed decisions about the next stages of development.
Learning from a real-world biotechnology journey
The workshop also featured Dr. Yohann Wittrant, Chief Scientific Officer of Clinic’n’Cell, who shared insights from his experience in biotechnology entrepreneurship.
His contribution illustrated how scientific vision, perseverance, and collaboration can help transform a research concept into a developing biotech venture. By connecting practical experience with the principles discussed during the session, his intervention offered participants a perspective on the challenges and opportunities involved in translating scientific innovation into business value.
