Legal and Regulatory Aspects of mRNA Research: From Academic Innovation to Market Application

Understanding the framework for mRNA innovation

As part of the VISION project, an online training session entitled “Legal & Regulatory Aspects of mRNA Research” brought together perspectives on the legal, regulatory, and intellectual property considerations that shape the development and translation of mRNA technologies.

The three-hour session was organized in collaboration with Wafa B’chir from Connect’Innov and Imène Najjar from Biomics at Institut Pasteur. It aimed to help participants understand the requirements involved in moving mRNA innovations from academic research towards industrial development and potential market application.

Exploring regulatory frameworks and development pathways

The training featured expert contributions from Sotiris Missailidis of Institut Pasteur and Guilherme Mulé of Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz.

Their presentations explored global regulatory frameworks, vaccine development pathways, technology transfer processes, and the challenges associated with bringing mRNA technologies to market.

By examining these interconnected aspects, the session highlighted how regulatory requirements and development strategies influence the progression of mRNA-based innovations, from early research to more advanced stages of development.

Intellectual property and technology transfer

Translating scientific discoveries into practical applications requires more than scientific and technical expertise. Intellectual property protection, appropriate legal frameworks, and effective technology transfer mechanisms are also essential to supporting innovation.

The session addressed these considerations in the context of mRNA research, highlighting the importance of understanding how knowledge and technologies can move between academic institutions and industry while navigating the relevant legal and regulatory requirements.

Bridging research, regulation, and industrial application through VISION

By providing access to specialized expertise in legal and regulatory matters, the VISION project helps researchers and innovators better understand the environment in which biomedical technologies are developed and commercialized.

This training contributes to VISION’s broader mission of strengthening the connection between scientific research and innovation, equipping participants with knowledge that can support the responsible translation of mRNA technologies into real-world applications.
