Immersive Learning: Exploring VR for Life Sciences Training

As part of the VISION Project, the virtual reality (VR) component of the Immerscio.bio training modules was successfully completed, introducing participants to a new approach to laboratory training through immersive digital technologies.

Seven participants took part in the VR sessions using Meta Quest headsets, entering an interactive virtual environment designed to support learning and engagement with laboratory-related content.

Rather than simply presenting information through conventional formats, the VR sessions enabled participants to navigate and interact with a simulated environment, providing a more immersive way to explore laboratory concepts and procedures. This hands-on approach illustrates how emerging technologies can complement traditional training methods and create new opportunities for scientific capacity building.

The sessions also offered a practical demonstration of the potential of virtual reality in life sciences education. By allowing participants to learn through interaction and simulation, VR can support understanding, engagement and knowledge retention while providing a controlled environment in which learners can explore different scenarios.

The experience highlighted the potential of immersive technologies to contribute to the evolution of scientific training, particularly in fields where practical access to specialised facilities, equipment or procedures may be limited.

The successful completion of this VR component represents another step in VISION’s efforts to explore innovative approaches to training and capacity building, bringing together scientific education and emerging technologies.

The sessions were supported by Marc Reis and Yasmine Massali, who assisted the trainers before and throughout the activities, contributing to the smooth implementation of the VR training.
