Reproducible Bioinformatics with Nextflow: Advancing OMICS Data Analysis

Strengthening bioinformatics capacities through hands-on training

As part of its commitment to developing scientific and technical expertise, the VISION project organized a three-day practical workshop at the Institut Pasteur de Tunis entitled “Reproducible Bioinformatics with Nextflow – Applications in OMICS.”

The workshop was delivered by the African BioGenome Project (AfricaBP), with Houcemeddine Othman and Firas Zemzem leading the sessions. It focused on equipping participants with practical skills to design, execute, and manage reproducible bioinformatics workflows for genomic and multi-omics data analysis.

Building reproducible bioinformatics workflows

Over three intensive days, participants explored the use of Nextflow, a workflow management system that enables the development and execution of computational pipelines across different computing environments.

Through practical exercises and real-world applications, the training introduced participants to key principles for building structured and reproducible analytical workflows. These approaches help standardize computational processes, improve the traceability of analyses, and facilitate the reuse and sharing of bioinformatics pipelines.

The workshop also highlighted the relevance of workflow management in genomics and other OMICS disciplines, where increasingly complex datasets require robust, scalable, and reproducible analytical strategies.

From computational skills to research applications

Hands-on training provided participants with opportunities to apply the concepts introduced during the sessions and explore their use in scientific research.

Developing proficiency in workflow management tools such as Nextflow can help researchers improve the consistency of computational analyses, facilitate collaboration, and support the reliable interpretation of genomic and multi-omics data.

These skills are increasingly important as biomedical research generates larger and more complex datasets, requiring efficient computational approaches and transparent analytical practices.
